Why I Write

Why I Write is the first of three projects I have done as part of the Minor in Writing. Never before have I given serious thought to why I want to write.  I knew I was attracted to writing because I want to develop the skill.  I want to be able to write well- from arguing a stance in an academic essay to writing popular articles and even letters to friends.   Maybe my minor will help me get a job I love but that's not why I applied.  I want to write for me.  Like many writers, I love words; I believe they have immeasurable power.  Writing is a realm in which I think I can excel.  I like that I can challenge myself, and in doing so, know myself.  There is so much more, I have found, to why I write.  I found that writing takes a lot of confidence, even to just think of myself as a writer.

This project was a journey for me.  Click the documents to see a draft and the final paper.

The Final

"Writing is about the feel for me.  It is empowering.  For a quiet girl like me, it means popping my head out of my shell and keeping it there.  I become an active participant in this world of creativity and knowledge.  My writing is out there in the world for people to critique but with the vulnerability comes confidence."
