Bethany Canning
Writing Portfolio
This portfolio represents a series of firsts for me but this one is the greatest. I created my first video- a short visual essay about our relationship, as college students, to food. I have always been interested in food and especially healthy living but the approach I took for this project was a little different. I took a look at the distorted perceptions of health on a college campus- ones that can lead to an unhealthy fixation on healthy eating. I investigated my own frustrations with our health obsessed society that does not truly encourage healthy attitudes about food. Several Michigan students helped me with this project by sharing a little bit about their own relationships with food as well as what they notice about food culture on campus.
The Assignment: We were given the task to take our repurposed projects and put them in a new medium. Same audience, new mode of communication.
My inspiration: I chose a video because it was something new, something I had never tried before. I can now add it to my list of acquired skills. More than that though, I think this is a project that lends itself to a visual medium. Sometimes it's easier to take in a message with your senses.
The documents below will take you to the notes and ideas that led to the completed video.
